National Parks in Assam – Know about 7 National Parks

Assam, a state in northeastern India, is renowned for its vast biodiversity and is considered one of the richest biodiversity areas in the world. The state is home to serve 07 (seven) national parks in assam and 17(seventeen) wildlife sanctuaries that house a diverse range of flora, fauna, and avifauna. Assam’s wildlife includes majestic species such as the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, Hoolock gibbons, Golden langurs, and many more.

Surrounded by the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Tripura, Assam also shares international borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and is in close proximity to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The unique biodiversity of Assam has earned it a reputation as an unspoiled natural wonder, with its numerous tea plantations adding to the charm.

The diverse floral wealth of the state is due to the various habitats it provides, including riverine grasslands, bamboo orchards, tropical and deciduous forests, among others. Protecting this wealth of flora and fauna has been of prime importance to the state, leading to the creation of seven important national parks in Assam, namely Kaziranga, Manas, Nameri, Orang, Dibru Saikhowa, Raimona, and Dehing Patkai. Additionally, Assam’s 17 wildlife sanctuaries also contribute significantly to the state’s distinct floral and faunal wealth.

In this article, we will discuss the existing 05(five) national parks in Assam and the other 02(two) national parks in Assam, which are added in June 2021, namely Dihing Patkai National Park and Raimona National Park. These two national park makes 07 national parks in Assam. The existing five National parks in Assam are Orang National Park, Dibru Saikhowa National Park, Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, and Nameri National Park.

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park was recognized as a National Park in 1974 and was recognized as a Tiger Conservation Site in 2006. In 1985, UNESCO declared Kaziranga National Park a “World Heritage Site”. The area of Kaziranga National Park is 858.98 sq km. Kaziranga National Park is the largest national park among all 07 national parks in assam.

Location: Golaghat, Nagaon, and Sonitpur district. It is 217 km from Guwahati.

Famous For: One-horned Indian Rhinoceros, White-winged wood duck (Deo hah), Wild Buffalo, Feral horses, Tigers, Bears, Bibbon, Dolphin, Indian Bison, Sambar, Hog dear, Jungle Cat, Jackal, etc.

Best Time to visit: November to April.

Dibru – Saikhowa National Park

Dibru-Saikhowa Sanctuary was recognized as Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in 1999. The land area of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is 340 sq. km.

Location: Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district. It is 13 km from Tinsukia town which is 490 km from Guwahati.

Famous For: White-winged wood duck (Deo hah), Wild Buffalo, Feral horses, Tigers, Monkey, Deer, Wild Pig, Salix Swamp, Land and aquatic Bird, and Snake, etc.

Best Time to visit: November to April.

Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park

Orang Sanctuary was recognized as Orang National Park In Assam in 1999. The land area of Orang National Park is 78.91 sq km. This national park is the smallest national park among all national parks in Assam.

Location: Udalguri and Sonitpur district. It is 32 km from Tezpur town which is 140 km from Guwahati.

Famous For: One-horned Indian Rhinoceros, elephant, leopard, sambar, deer, tiger, varieties of water birds, green pigeon, florican, teal, gees, etc.

Best Time to visit: November to April.

Manas National Park

Manas National Park was declared a Tiger Project in 1973 and UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1985. Manas National Sanctuary was recognized as Manas National Park in 1990. The land area of this Park is 500 sq. km. Manas National Park is the second largest national park among all 07 national parks in assam.

Location: Chirang and Baksa district. It is situated at a distance of 180 km from Guwahati.

Famous For: Hispid hare, pigmy hog, golden langur, tiger, wild buffalo, Asian elephant, gaur, Indian rhinoceros, wild boar, sambar, deer, hog deer, etc.

Best Time to visit: November to April.

Nameri National Park

In 1985, Nameri was recognized as a sanctuary and in 1998 it was recognized as Nameri National Park. In 2000, Nameri national park was declared a tiger project. Nameri National Park has an area of 200 sq km.

Location: Sonitpur district. It is located about 35 km away from Tezpur town.

Famous For: White-winged wood duck (Deo hah), tiger, 4 species of hornbill, golden mahseer, black bear, many types of deers, butterflies, elephant, fish, etc.

Best Time to visit: November to April.

Raimona National Park

The Gosaigaon reserve forest in Kokrajhar district was recognized as Raimana National Park on June 5, 2021. The land area of Raimana National Park is 422 sq. km.

Location: Kokrajhar district.

Famous For: Elephants, tigers, golden langurs, clouded leopard, wild buffalo, spotted deer, over 150 species of butterflies, 170 species of birds including the white-bellied heron, and nearly 380 species of plants, etc.

Best Time to visit: November to April.

Dehing Patkai National Park

Dehing Patkai was recognized as Dehing Patkai Sanctuary in 2004. It was recognized as a National Park on December 13, 2020, and was officially declared as Dehing Patkai National Park on June 9, 2021. The land area of Dehing Patkai National Park is 231.65 sq km.

Location: Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district.

Famous For: White-winged wood duck (Deo hah), 310 species of butterflies, 47 mammal species including tigers and clouded leopards, 47 reptile species, and 310 species of butterflies, etc.

Best Time to Visit: November to April.
